Frequently asked Questions- FAQ

General frequently asked questions about SET and the courses offered:

How is SET different from other higher education institutions?

S.E.T. is an educational institution working in close cooperation with various educational providers such as universities and universities of applied sciences. This is why we can offer university courses and award Univ. degrees. Our courses are based on an innovative semi-virtual concept enabling the students to access a supervised learning portal on-line. Using this portal, students can study in the comfort of their home and on their own time on our virtual campus. The students' attendance is only required during the attendance periods. This way, students are given the opportunity to study anywhere and to distribute their workload flexibly while working towards a university degree.

What does semi-virtual stand for?

All students are granted access to our learning portal where they can log onto our virtual campus via the internet. The portal is accessible from every computer with an internet connection so you can study from home. The virtual campus contains state-of-the-art E-learning tools (e.g. instruction videos, virtual classrooms, chat, etc.). In addition, workshops, seminars and examinations are taken on location at the S.E.T.

Is is advisable to take a semi-virtual course and what are the advantages?

State universities are also increasingly making use of E-learnung tools and semi-virtual course concepts. This advanced method offers several major advantages: the flexible distribution of your study time and the modern learning portal enable efficient studies. In contrast to distance learning courses, our concept is based on using the internet, thereby enabling the close cooperation between students and regular feeback by the lecturers, even during the virtual course periods.

Is is possible to take a very practical course such as audio engineering in a semi-virtual manner?

Nowadays computers are powerful enough to simulate a large professional recording studio. They substitute large mixing panels and are able to emulate various sound effect devices. For the course Sound Engineer (Univ.) we use the software ProTools by Digidesign as our standard software. This software is used worldwide in most of the large studios. The budget version ProTools LE offers the same interface as its more expensive counterpart and it can turn your home computer into a professional digital studio. This way it is possible to work your way through a portion of the assignments using your computer. During the presence periods, practical exercises and assignments are taken using the mixing panels and workstations on location in our professional studios. Students are given the opportunity to book additional practice lessons during the attendance periods. This way we make sure that the practical aspect of the course is properly represented.

Which of the courses offered are state-certified?

All Bachelor's and Master's graduates receive state-certified degrees. A Master's degree also enables the graduate to pursue a doctoral level course.

Are the Univ. degrees (e.g. Audio Engineer univ.)
state-certified as well?

The Univ. degree is not state-certified. However, as this degree can only be granted by a state-certified university or by educational institutions working in close cooperation with these universites, the degree's extra value and recognition is guaranteed.

How are the "My" courses different from the other courses?

In contrast to the univ. courses focussing on the carreer development in their respective fields, "My" courses are aimed at music and technology enthusiasts looking to expand their expertise (e.g. people with a home recording studio, band musicians etc.). Upon passing the course, the student receives a certificate by the S.E.T. and if he or she choses to continue by taking the corresponding univ. course, 50% of the "My" course's fees will be reimbursed.

What are the requirements for taking an SET course?

In order to take a course a home computer with internet access is required. The special requirements for each course are listed in the course information for each course.

How do I apply and when is the deadline for application?

We adivse students to apply as soon as possible to increase the chances of entering the desired course. The application deadline ends 6 weeks before the beginning of the course. The application procedure comprises three steps:

Step 1: non-binding pre-application using the Application form; the applicant is now registered and recieves log-in data for the internal student network by e-mail.

Step 2: the applicant logs into the student network, which is still a non-binding procedure, where he or she fills in all required personal data and downloads the terms and conditions of the course and the course contract.

Step 3: binding application; the applicant signs the contract and sends it to the S.E.T. by mail along with required qualification and/or graduation certificates.

Do additional fees apply?

No, there are no additional fees. The total fees correspond to the amount stated in the course descriptions.

Can I work while taking a course?

Yes, you can! The course concept is designed to enable the student's free allocation of study time. However, students should be able to attend to the presence periods being held on location at the SET.
